Two years ago I spoke at TEDGlobal 2007 in Arusha, Tanzania. I don't even like looking at that video today because I was so nervous that I though I was going to vomit. My words left me and I didn't even hear the conference host Chris Anderson's questions correctly. My English was not very good after being out of school for five years. Chris helped me get through it.
Two years later, today, I got a chance to give my own talk at TEDGlobal 2009 in Oxford, UK. I was invited as one of 25 TED Fellows. This time I was alone on stage with only my slides. I practiced over and over and over. A lot of people helped me be a better presenter, including Rives. And this time it went great. When I was finished, I said to myself, "Was that really me?' I have a lot more confidence now, because if I can do a good job at TED, then I can succeed at other conferences, too, like the upcoming Maker Faire Africa. TED has told me they will post the talk later in September.
